A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," said an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
