Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
