Puzzling Magenta Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Prompts Fears of Possible Algae Outbreak
Authorities in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with some scientists concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Extensive Appearance On Coastline
The magenta-hued slime appeared along a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60km south of the capital. A like substance has also been noted on areas of another local beach and a separate bay.
Samples Collected for Analysis
Examples have been collected and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A official commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in food sources, warmth, rain or illumination".
"They are at times called red or pink tides because the proliferations can turn the water crimson," the official noted. "Not all algae outbreaks are toxic, with numerous types functioning as a key source of energy for animals in the oceanic food chain."

Increasing Frequency Linked to Climate Change
Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their frequency has risen in recent years, partially due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that combine to create food-loaded oceans geared for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically function as the ocean's waste processors. During a bloom, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that interferes with the healthy balance of aquatic systems.

"Typically one notices a bloom of this algae after a outbreak of something else, or for example a fish reproduction," she said.
Demands for Action and Public Safety
A campaigner, who collected samples of the rosy slime in the state, said it seemed the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and proposed the fish farming business was the primary suspect, referring to similar cases in other places.
"Thus the state needs to send a clear message here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to examine the specimens we've gathered and we need to inform the public here," she emphasized.

Claims of Dead Marine Life and Appeals for Leadership Intervention
An environmental foundation has reported lifeless animals and deceased marine life washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the situation as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the government head to visit and "lead the response that authorities must be doing".

Speaking to the media, the official stated he was uninformed of any connections between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, emphasizing scientific testing was required before determinations could be made.
"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are environmentally safe and sustainable," he said.
"Our coastal assets across the island are our treasures and we need to guarantee the community and our industry can live together to use our waterways productively and in a lasting way."
