The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels
Multiple areas of the capital registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times exceeding safe limits.
Fireworks Ban and New Policy Shifts
For the past four years, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
However recently, the recently formed local administration petitioned the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".
Court Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judges agreed to the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during limited hours throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around late evening to some of the worst levels recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.
International Effects
The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.
Persistent Environmental Issue
The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
During celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest city.
Diverse Pollution Sources
This crisis in the capital is attributed to a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in adjacent regions of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.
The contaminated air causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities each year in Delhi.
